The challenge
Millions of Cambodian sellers run their businesses on Facebook and TikTok, where video performs best. AI advertising tools such as Creatify, Synthesia and HeyGen have made video cheaper elsewhere, but they do not support Khmer. Sellers with the smallest production budgets therefore have the least access to automation.
Our approach
We built it as a service with software underneath rather than pure self-serve. Clients submit product information; the pipeline drafts script, voice and composition; a human reviews before delivery. That kept quality defensible while the generation stack matured, and it let us learn what Khmer ad copy actually needs before automating the judgment away.
What it had to achieve
- Produce a publishable Khmer video ad from a product description
- Sound natural in Khmer, not like a translated script read by an English voice
- Keep output quality controllable rather than fully automatic
- Price it for a seller, not an agency
Architecture
The decisions that made the rest possible.
Programmatic composition with Remotion
Video is generated from React components, so a template change applies to every future ad and output stays deterministic and reviewable.
Khmer speech synthesis via Google Cloud TTS
Script generation and voice synthesis are separate stages, so copy can be edited and re-voiced without regenerating the whole composition.
Human review gate before delivery
Every advertisement passes a review step. Generation is a drafting tool, not the final authority. That review makes the output safe to sell.
Template library over per-ad design
Ads are produced from a small set of maintained templates, keeping unit cost near zero while output stays on-brand.
What we delivered
- Client intake flow for product information and brand preferences
- AI script generation tuned for Khmer ad copy
- Khmer voiceover synthesis with editable script stage
- Remotion-based video composition from maintained templates
- Review and delivery workflow with revision handling
- Next.js client portal for submissions and finished ads
Outcomes
What changed once it was live.
- Khmer sellers get video ads without hiring a production crew
- Template improvements lift quality across all future output at once
- Copy can be revised and re-voiced without re-rendering from scratch
What we would do differently
Every project teaches something. Publishing it is how you tell whether a team is reflecting or just selling.
- The service-with-software model was the right entry point. Full self-serve would have shipped unreviewable Khmer copy and burned the brand early.
- Generating video from code rather than a timeline editor is what makes quality improvements compound instead of being per-ad craft.
